Spanish is a romance language belonging to the Iberian group that includes many varieties, due to its large geographic scope (mainly Spain and a large part of Latin America). It is the second most spoken language in the world as a mother tongue, after Mandarin Chinese. This is why it is one of the United Nations’ six official languages.
